Frequently Asked Solar Power Questions

1. How Does Solar Work?
  • Solar Electricity works by converting the Sun's light that hits a solar panel into electricity. This Electricity is in the form of DC current. In order for us to use this in the home, we need to run the DC through an Inverter and change that electricity from DC to AC.

2. What is meant by Export to the Grid?
  • When you produce Solar Electricity during the day, if you don't use all that electricity produced, it needs to go somewhere, we don't store it in batteries, and we "Export" it to the Grid.
  • The Grid is the poles and wires out on the street.
3. What is a Feed in Tariff?
  • If you produce more electricity that you use, the excess is exported to the grid and your electricity provider may pay you for that electricity you put back into the grid.
  • Depending on what electricity provider you are with, it can range from Zero cents to 8 cents per kilowatt exported.
4. What size system do I need to install?
  • The size of your system depends on a number of factors, including, how you intend to use your power in the future, are your needs going to increase or decrease? Are you looking to put in large appliances such as pool pumps, freezers etc.
  • We need to look at your average electricity usage during daylight hours and design a system that will cover this usage.
5. Are there other things I can do around the home to reduce my electricity bill?
  • Certainly, you can look at the time at which you use your electricity; you can look at energy saving devices as well as considering energy efficient LED lighting as well as other examples we can discuss with you.
6. Are there still rebates available?
  • Rebates are still available and they vary depending on the size of the system you install. Our consultants will be happy to work this out for you.
7. What about insurances and Licenses?
  • Purcell Electrics is fully insured and fully licensed. We are also accredited members of the clean energy council.
8. How quickly can my system be installed?
  • From the date that you decide to go ahead with our quote, we can typically have the system installed within two weeks, depending on availability.
9. What type of products can I expect to receive in my Solar System?
  • We only use the best products in our Solar Electricity designs. We use world class inverter technology and the panels we use were recently voted Australia's #1 Solar Panels
10. How quickly will my new Solar System pay for itself?
  • Your new Solar system if designed correctly can pay for itself in around 3 1/2 years.
11. If I don't go Solar Now, what can I expect my bills to be in the future?
  • It was not that long ago that we were paying as little as 8-10 cents per kilowatt for our peak electricity. We now typically pay 33-35 cents per kilowatt. There are many that believe that the price of electricity in the next 2-3 years will exceed 50 cents per kilowatt.
  • If you currently have a bill of $750 plus, you can expect to be paying up to $1200 within the next few years.
12. How much solar electricity can I produce in a day?
  • According to the Clean Energy Council, we can expect to produce between 4-5 hours per day on average, slightly less in winter months and slightly more in summer months.
  • We simply multiply these average daylight hours by the kilowatt system size to determine total production.
  • For example, we might install a 2-kilowatt system on your roof, in optimum conditions, you can multiply the 2kw by 4 hours and you will produce 8kilowatts of electricity for the day.
13. How much will I save off my electricity bill each quarter?
  • This depends very much on the size of the system you choose and how you use you electricity.
  • If you install a small system that does not cover your daytime average, your bill will not decrease much at all.
  • If you install a larger system size than you need, then you will cover your daily "Sunlight" hours usage but you may over invest and your return on your investment may be lower than you expect.
  • This is why we include a detailed "Bill Analysis" in every quote that we do.
